Navratri 2022: Day 7 Maa Kalaratri Story
According to legend, Goddess Parvati was known as Goddess Kalaratri when she shed her outer golden skin to slay demons. The most ferocious manifestation of Maa Durga is Kalaratri. She has four hands, a donkey to ride, a garland of skulls around her neck, and a dark complexion. She is holding a sword and a lethal iron hook in her left hands while her right hands are in the protective and blessing mudras of Abhaya and Varada. She is also referred to as the goddess Shubhankari, Kalratri, and Kaalratri. Her name is a combination of the words Kala, which signifies death, and Ratri, which means darkness. Kalaratri thereby brings about the “death of darkness.”

According to Hindu mythology, Indra and other Gods appealed to Goddess Parvati when Shumbha and Nishumbha defeated the Gods with the aid of Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej. To slay them, she created Goddess Chandi. While the goddess Chandi killed the other demons, Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej remained undaunted. From her forehead, it’s believed, she formed Maa Kalaratri to put an end to them.
Maa Kalaratri engaged both demons in battle. While Chanda and Munda were killed by Goddess Kalaratri, it was difficult for her to defeat Raktabeej. He received a blessing from Lord Brahma that enabled every drop of his blood that fell to the ground to become a clone of him. Maa Kalaratri didn’t give up and started consuming Raktabeej’s clones’ blood. Ultimately, he was killed by her.
