Navy Day: India observes Navy Day on December 4 every year in recognition of its sailors’ bravery in the 1971 war with Pakistan. The day recognises the role and achievements of the Indian sailors. It commemorates the launch of Operation Trident in which it sank four Pakistani vessels including PNS Khaibar. Hundreds of Pakistani Navy personnel were killed in the attack.
Indian Navy organises a number of events to mark the Day on December 4 every year.
It sank four Pakistani vessels
On December 3, 1971, Pakistan attacked Indian airbases during the India-Pakistan war. In rebuttal, the Navy launched Operation Trident and sent three missile boats — Nirghat, Veer and Nipat — to Pakistan’s Naval headquarters in Karachi at maximum speed. The attack was planned at night as Pakistan did not have the aircraft to carry out bombings in the dark. The Indian Navy sank four Pakistani vessels, including PNS Khaibar.
The Navy sank a minesweeper, a destroyer, and an ammunition supply ship in the attack killing hundreds of Pakistani soldiers.
During the attack, Indian sailors communicated in Russian to avoid detection. No Indian sailors were killed in the attack.
An outreach initiative to increase awareness
On this day the Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam organises practical demonstrations to exhibit its strength and skills of the naval submarines, ships, aircraft, and other forces. The day begins with a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial at RK Beach.
Before the Navy Day also, it organises other events such as an open sea swimming competition, civilians’ visit to the ships, veteran sailor’s lunch, Naval Symphonic Orchestra, beating retreat, tattoo ceremonies etc.
While commemorating the Day, Indian Navy aims to boost outreach and increase awareness about the Navy amongst the general public.
