NCW Chairperson Suggests Possible Pakistani Link to Obscene Comment on Captain Anshuman Singh’s Widow, Smriti Singh

NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma suggests a possible Pakistani link to the derogatory comment on Captain Anshuman Singh’s widow, Smriti Singh, prompting swift legal action.

Rekha Sharma, the chairman of the National Commission for Women (NCW), has stated that an insulting comment made to Smriti Singh, the widow of Captain Anshuman Singh, the recipient of the Kirti Chakra, may have come from a social media user in Pakistan.

Immediate Action by NCW and Police Complaint

Following their observation of the derogatory comment on social media, the NCW moved swiftly to lodge a case with the Delhi Police on their own initiative. Charges of defaming the modesty of a woman and posting obscene content online have been brought forward in a formal complaint.

Speaking to ANI, Rekha Sharma stated, “It was a very low-rated comment which we saw on social media and immediately took suo motu cognisance of it. Police have filed an FIR against this person. But most likely the person is from Pakistan.”

Honouring Captain Anshuman Singh’s Bravery

Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously honoured with the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, for his heroic actions during a fire at an army camp in Siachen Glacier last year. Smriti Singh and her mother-in-law received the award from President Droupadi Murmu on July 5.

Outrage and FIR Registration

The NCW’s complaint came in response to widespread outrage on social media after a disrespectful comment was posted on a photo of Smriti Singh accepting the award. Delhi Police have registered an FIR, and their Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit is investigating the social media account behind the comment. The NCW has called for a swift investigation and a report on the action taken within three days.

Rekha Sharma emphasized, “Many such comments are being made and we are taking those comments very seriously and complaining to the police to file FIRs in those cases as well.”

Call for Restraint Amid Family Allegations

Addressing allegations from Captain Singh’s father, Ravi Pratap Singh, that Smriti Singh took the gallantry award and other belongings to her home in Punjab’s Gurdaspur, Sharma urged both parties to resolve their differences through dialogue.
