A test venue in Chennai allegedly forced candidates of the National Eligibility Comprehensive Entrance Test (Undergraduate) NEET to take off their bras on Sunday.
A journalist from Chennai who was present at the exam site tweeted about the unfortunate event. The journalist, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that she noticed a girl sitting awkwardly in a corner and decided to approach the girl to see how she was doing.
The female then recounted the entire episode to the boy. The girl said that she was instructed to take her bra off while taking the test. The journalist offered her a scarf when she told him, so she could cover herself. The girl declined, claiming that her brother was coming to take her up.
The journalist was cruelly teased online over the tweet, which made it necessary for her to later delete it.
“Those who ask me obscene questions should ask the exam board if wearing a bra is allowed or not,” she tweeted.
Similar circumstances have happened multiple times recently, sparking political controversy when testing centres barred women from wearing bras while taking tests. The Mar Thoma Institute of Information Technology in Kerala reportedly required students to take off their bras before the exam last year for’security’ concerns.
In Tamil Nadu, over 1.5 lakh students took the NEET exam on Sunday.
Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, the state’s minister of education, said that CM Stalin has vehemently denounced the incident.
Mahesh further criticised the practise of checking each student at NEET by taking off their clothes and hairpins, which has been going on for the past three years.
