Nellore stampede: Prime Minister Modi announces Rs 2 lakhs ex-gratia for surviving family members

The Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund would provide ex-gratia payments of Rs. 2 lakh to the surviving family members of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 to each injured person, according to PM Modi’s announcement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the bereaved families. Taking to Twitter, he wrote, “Pained by the mishap at a public meeting in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. An ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and the injured would be given Rs 50,000”.

Incident happenned when Chandrababu Naidu, the leader of the TDP, was speaking at a roadshow in Kandukuru town. The event attracted a sizable crowd, and there was some jostling among attendees during the meeting, which caused a stampede-like situation at the canal. The injured people were admitted to nearby hospital.

Naidu pledged financial help of Rs 10 lakhs per family to the victims’ relatives in the wake of the disaster. The children of those killed in the event would attend educational institutes run by the NTR Trust, according to Naidu.
