New Parliament building: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building on May 28, the Opposition parties sharpened their attack on Centre. From calling the PM self-gratifying and authoritarian, to comparing the new complex with a coffin, the opposition left nothing unsaid. Read on to know how the parties opposing the new complex reacted.
‘Self-glorifying authoritarian PM’
The Congress launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister after he inaugurated the new Parliament building. It called him a “self-glorifying authoritarian PM with utter disdain for parliamentary procedures.”
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “On this day, May 28th: Nehru, the person who did the most to nurture Parliamentary democracy in India, was cremated in 1964. Savarkar, the person whose ideological ecosystem led to the killing of Mahatma Gandhi, was born in 1883.”
Shashi Tharoor on Sengol controversy
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor commented on the ongoing controversy over Sengol spctre. “My own view on the #sengol controversy is that both sides have good arguments. The government rightly argues that the sceptre reflects a continuity of tradition by embodying sanctified sovereignty & the rule of dharma. The Opposition rightly argues that the Constitution was adopted in the name of the people & that sovereignty abides in the people of India as represented in their Parliament, and is not a kingly privilege handed down by divine right,” Tharoor said.
“The two positions are reconcilable if one simply drops the debateable red herring about the sceptre having been handed to Nehru by Mountbatten to symbolise the transfer of power, a story for which there is no proof,” the Congress leader explained.
RJD’s makes ‘coffin’ jibe
RJD compared the new Parliament with a coffin. Its leader Shakti Singh Yadav said, “The coffin in our tweet is a representation of democracy being buried. The country will not accept this. Parliament is the temple of democracy and it is the place to have discussions.”
NCP MP Supriya Sule said, “To open a new Parliament building without the Opposition makes it an incomplete event. It means there is no democracy in the country.”
Meanwhile, Sikh Guru Balbir Singh who participated in the multi-faith prayers at the inauguration of the new Parliament building soke about unity. He said, “It is a very good thing that the new Parliament has been built. I keep myself away from politics, the only thing I can say is that everyone should work unitedly for the growth of the country.”
