Prabir Purkayastha, the founder and editor-in-chief of the news portal NewsClick, has been arrested by Delhi Police under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). This arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations that NewsClick received funds for promoting pro-China propaganda. Delhi Police also sealed the NewsClick office as part of their probe into the matter.
Founder of NewsClick Arrested Under Anti-Terror Law
The case against NewsClick and its journalists was registered on August 17th, following a New York Times report that claimed the website had received funds from an American millionaire who allegedly supported the dissemination of Chinese propaganda. The investigation has been ongoing since then.
Delhi Police revealed that, in connection with the UAPA case, they have arrested Prabir Purkayastha and another individual named Amit Chakravarty. Additionally, they have questioned a total of 37 male suspects at various locations and interviewed 9 female suspects at their respective places of residence. Digital devices, documents, and other materials have been seized for further examination.
This incident underscores the increasing scrutiny and legal actions taken against media outlets and individuals in India, particularly in cases related to alleged foreign funding or propaganda. It also raises concerns about the implications for freedom of the press and freedom of expression in the country as such actions can potentially have a chilling effect on journalism and dissenting voices.
