The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation into the event where pro-Khalistani protestors protested at the Indian High Commission in London and tore down the national flag.
The Home Ministry has reportedly granted the NIA permission to register the case, according to sources. The Ministry of Home Affairs’ Counter Terrorism and Counter Radicalization (CTCR) section turned it over to the NIA.
According to sources, the Delhi Police Special Cell, which is transferring the registered case to the NIA, has been asked to provide a copy of the FIR.
After meeting with UK representatives last week, the MHA decided to turn the matter on to the NIA. According to ANI, it has been learned that a special NIA team, which would include an officer with the rank of Deputy Inspector General, may travel to London “very soon.”
In addition to cybercrimes and human trafficking, the NIA Act was amended by the Centre in August 2019 to allow the agency to look into terrorist attacks against Indians and Indian interests abroad.
An earlier pro-Khalistan protest was held on March 19 in front of the Indian High Commission in the UK, with banners and posters honouring Amritpal Singh being waved.
The pro-Khalistani individuals tore down the national flag flying above the Indian High Commission in London during the protest. Videos posted on social media show a guy climbing the walls of the Indian High Commission as the supporters yelled “Khalistan Zindabad.”
When the Punjab government started a full-scale offensive against Amritpal Singh, a supporter of the extreme Khalistani movement, the attack took place. Amritpal Singh has so far eluded capture, despite the fact that the police have detained a number of his associates. Over the past few months, Amritpal Singh has gotten more active in Punjab.
