Delhi ordinance: Politics is hotting up over Centre’s Delhi ordinance. On Sunday, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar met with his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, and declared his support for the AAP leader on the issue. Centre brought an ordinance to give control of services back to Delhi Lieutenant Governor and Delhi CM. The Bihar CM said the ordinance is “against the Constitution”.
“How can powers given to an elected government be taken away? It’s against the Constitution. We stand with Arvind Kejriwal. We are trying to bring together all opposition parties in the country,” Nitish told the media after the meeting.
Unity among opposition parties
Nitish reached Kejriwal’s residence for a meeting to forge unity among opposition parties against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, besides Manoj Jha, Lalan Singh and Sanjay Jha accompanied the Janata Dal United leader.
After the meeting, Kejriwal spoke to the media and said the ordinance, if passed, can send a strong message to the BJP. “Today, during a meeting with Nitish Ji, he said he stands with the people of Delhi on the issue of the Centre bringing an ordinance negating the SC order in favour of Delhi. If the Centre brings this ordinance as a bill, if all non-BJP parties come together, it can be defeated in Rajya Sabha. If such a thing happens, it can send a message that the BJP govt will be out in 2024,” Kejriwal said.
According to the sources, CM Kejriwal is likely to appeal to extend the opposition’s support in this matter in Rajya Sabha.
‘Blissfully ignorant of the law’
On Sunday Kejriwal had said he would reach out to the opposition parties over the Centre’s National Capital Civil Service Authority (NCCSA) ordinance. The Delhi government has deemed the ordinance “blissfully ignorant of the law”.
“There is an appeal to the opposition parties to oppose this in the Rajya Sabha. I will personally talk to all the opposition leaders regarding this. Such a law cannot come that destroys democracy; no such law can come that attacks the basic structure of the Constitution. It is now a matter of battle between the Supreme Court and the Central Government,” he said.
