The Nehru Memorial in Delhi has been renamed. Now Nehru Memorial will be known as PM Memorial. The Congress has attacked the government over the name change. The Congress has said that the change in name is the result of vendetta and parochialism. The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library will now be known as the Prime Minister’s Museum and Society.
The decision was sealed under the chairmanship of Rajnath Singh
According to media reports, a special meeting was held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, in which the decision to rename the Nehru Memorial was approved. Rajnath Singh is the Vice-Chairman of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. And the Prime Minister is its chairman. Apart from these, 29 members including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, G Kishan Reddy, Anurag Thakur are included in this society.
Teen Murti Bhavan, part of Edwin Lutyens’ Imperial Capital, was the official residence of the Commander-in-Chief of India during the British rule. In 1948, Teen Murti Bhavan became the official residence of Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister, after the departure of the last Commander-in-Chief of British India. Pandit Nehru lived in this house for 16 years and breathed his last here. Thereafter, this Teen Murti Bhavan was dedicated to the memory of Pandit Nehru and came to be known as the Pandit Nehru Museum and Memorial. Now the Central Government has changed its name from Nehru Memorial to PM Museum and Society.
Congress has criticized this decision of the Center. Senior Congress leader and Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh tweeted that ‘change in name is the result of vendetta and narrow-mindedness’. For the past 59 years, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library has been a global intellectual hub and a treasure trove of books. What will PM Modi not stop to mutilate, malign and destroy the name and legacy of the architect of the Indian nation-state. A small person burdened with insecurities is a self-proclaimed world guru.
