Jaishankar Meets Blinken: Speaking with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Canadian accusations that India was complicit in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar did not come up, according to State Department spokesman Matthew Miller on Wednesday. On Friday, September 22, S Jaishankar and Antony Blinken had a meeting in New York while attending the UNGA session.
India-Canada Tensions Absent in Discussions
When asked about the conversations between Jaishankar and Blinken, Miller said, “That was not a bilateral meeting. It was a meeting of a number of countries. The issue (India-Canada tensions) did not come up.” Miller urged India to fully cooperate with the Canadian probe while reiterating the US’s position on Canada’s accusations. “We have engaged with our Indian counterparts on this and encouraged them to cooperate with the Canadian investigation and we continue to encourage them to cooperate,” Miller said.
S Jaishankar’s Call for Collaboration
S Jaishankar stated on Tuesday that there is a “very compelling need” for India and the US to collaborate and argued that Washington benefits from allies who have positive views of and speak highly of the US. Miller stressed the necessity of a comprehensive inquiry of Canada’s claims earlier this week. “We are deeply concerned by the allegations referenced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. We remain in close contact with our Canadian partners,” Miller stated. Nijjar’s killing had previously been linked to Indian authorities, according to a charge that New Delhi strenuously refuted.
