The government has “no record” of the deaths of the farmers who camped out at Delhi borders protesting against the now repealed three farm laws, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has informed Parliament on Wednesday.
In a written reply to Opposition’s question regarding the financial assistance to the families of farmers who died during the protest, the Union Minister said that the Ministry of Agriculture has no record in the matter and hence the question does not arise.
In response to a question raised by Congress MP KC Venugopal on attacks on farmers by the administration or citizens, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said there were no reported cases of “hurt to farmers due to attack on farmers’ protests” separately.
Prime Minister Modi on Guru Nanak Jayanti announced to repeal the three farm laws. However, the protesting farmers are standing firm on their demands, with the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) calling on the government to come to the table and discuss all pending issues with farm leaders.
Meanwhile, as per media reports, as many as 700 farmers died while protesting against the contentious agri laws at the Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders since November 2020. Most of the deaths were due to harsh weather, illness contracted from unhygienic conditions, and suicide.
