Noida Police has started looking into the manhandling of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi who was enroute to Hathras on Saturday. She along with her brother Rahul Gandhi and other party members were stopped from crossing DND Flyover.
After their car was stopped, the Congress leaders started on-foot march but police pushed back a few of them forcefully. As Priyanka tried to shield her party workers, a police officer grabbed her kurta and pushed her during the incident while a crowd surrounded them.
The Gautam Buddh Nagar police on Sunday apologised to Priyanka for the incident and said that it has ordered a probe into it.
“Noida Police profoundly regrets the incident with Priyanka Gandhi while handling an unruly crowd at the DND. We also apologise to Priyanka Gandhi.”
“The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and ordered an inquiry to be conducted by a senior lady officer. We, at Noida Police, are committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of women,” the district police said in a statement.
There were two instances of ruckus involving Congress workers and the Gautam Buddh Nagar police during which Priyanka Gandhi was manhandled.
Noida additional deputy commissioner had said that Police stopped Congress leaders because they were violating Section 144 imposed in the state.
“They are violating the Section 144 of CrPC. We are deployed here to control the unlawful assembling of people. We are appealing for peace amid Covid-19 outbreak, in larger public interest they should disperse,” he had said.
Later, Priyanka Gandhi and her brother Rahul Gandhi were allowed by UP Police to travel to Hathras to visit the 10-year-old gang-rape victim’s parents. They were accompanied by senior party leaders K.C. Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and P.L. Punia. The leaders spent almost an hour with the bereaved family.
