In response to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the grand alliance of opposition parties may be named the ‘Patriotic Democratic Alliance’ (PDA). However, a final decision on this is likely to be taken at the proposed meeting of the opposition parties in Shimla next month.
According to the information, CPI General Secretary D Raja had given such an indication while addressing the party workers in Patna on Saturday. He had also said that this alliance would take its actual shape in the proposed meeting in Shimla on 10th or 12th of next month.
The name of the alliance can be ‘Patriotic Democratic Alliance’ – D Raja
According to a report in HT, when D Raja was contacted over the phone on Sunday, he said that the name of the alliance could be ‘PDA’, but the final decision would be taken only in the Shimla meeting. He said ‘we can say that the name of the new alliance can be ‘Patriotic Democratic Alliance’. We have not taken a final decision on this. Our primary objective is to defeat the NDA and there is clarity among all opposition parties on this.
‘The name will be kept in line with the spirit of the shared opposition’
Raja says the ideology of the opposition parties that have come together is secular and democratic and the name of the front should reflect this. He said, ‘There is the Secular Democratic Front in Tamil Nadu, while we have the Grand Alliance in Bihar. Therefore, we will have a name that reflects our commitments as a common opposition.
UPA was formed after the elections in 2004
When the NDA was defeated in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress, the Left and other anti-BJP parties formed the UPA or the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre. In Bihar in 2015, when RJD, JDU, Congress and Left parties joined hands to oppose BJP, it was named Grand Alliance. Even now there is a government of this Grand Alliance in Bihar.
