India has given a big message to the world by testing a nuclear-capable ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons from the nuclear-capable submarine INS Arihant. From the beginning, India has been following this strategy that we will not use nuclear weapons first and if the enemy country acts, then we will not leave it. Importantly, the Defense Ministry has formally announced the successful test of a ballistic missile in the Bay of Bengal.
The weapon system met all operational and technical standards. The ministry, however, did not disclose the submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), which was fired from the 6,000-tonne INS Arihant. This submarine of India is fully operational since 2018. Indian ballistic missile submarine can target China and Pakistan from under the sea. This has made one thing more clear that the indigenous INS Arihant class submarine has started working on every aspect. It is also a big warning for the enemy.
Test for more than 700 km
Sources told our affiliate newspaper Times of India that the SLBM that was tested was a BO-5 or K-15 missile, which has a strike range of 750 km to target the enemy. A source said, “INS Arihant is equipped with short-range K-15 missiles. The development trial of K-4 SLBM with a range of 3,500 km has been completed but it is yet to be fully inducted. India is the sixth country in the world after the US, Russia, UK, France and China to have a nuclear submarine equipped with ballistic missiles.’
Tension continues with China in eastern Ladakh
The government has announced the launch of SLBM for the first time from INS Arihant. This test has taken place at a time when the tension between India and China continues in Eastern Ladakh and both the countries have deployed more than 50,000 soldiers. Large arms have also been installed on the front. There has been a military standoff between the two countries for 30 months.
On the other hand, the world is apprehensive about the Russo-Ukraine war. There are fears that Russia may launch a nuclear attack and this is the first such threat has arisen since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The ministry said in a statement, ‘Successful test-fire of SLBM from INS Arihant on 14 October. It was carried out to a predetermined range and met all operational and technical parameters while hitting targets in the Bay of Bengal with perfect accuracy.’
INS Arihant has strengthened India’s existing nuclear triad that is nuclear attack capability from land, sky and sea, but to make it more reliable and powerful, it needs a long-range missile carrying SSBN. The other two parts of the triad have become much stronger with the presence of ground-launched ballistic missiles of the Agni series and fighter jets like the Sukhoi-30MKI, Mirage-2000 and Rafale. These fighters are capable of dropping nuclear gravity bombs.
It is believed that the second such submarine INS Arighat can be fully operational next year with some delay. The US, Russia and China have missiles with a range of more than 5,000 km. In such a situation, having a more powerful SSBN will increase the credibility and strength of India. It will become clear that if the enemy dares to attack first, India has the ability to destroy it. India is believed to be working on missiles with a range of up to 8,000 km.
