Olympic Gold Medalist Neeraj Chopra Urges Authorities to Act Against the Accused

Neeraj Chopra: Since a while ago, wrestlers like Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik have been demonstrating at Jantar Mantar in support of Brij Bhushan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), who has been accused of sexual harassment. Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra asked the authorities to address the situation and take the necessary action against accused sexual harasser and former WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh on Friday.

Neeraj Chopra shared a massage which reads, “It hurts me to see our athletes on the streets demanding justice. They have worked hard to represent our great nation and make us proud. As a nation, we are responsible for safeguarding the integrity and dignity of every individual, athlete or not. What’s happening should never happen. This is a sensitive issue, and must be dealt with in an impartial and transparent manner. Pertaining authorities must take quick action in order to ensure that justice is served.”

Petition filed by seven wrestlers

The Delhi government and other parties received notices from the Supreme Court on Tuesday in response to a petition filed by seven wrestlers who claimed that Birj Bhushan had sexually harassed them but that no FIR had been filed. These were “serious allegations,” according to the notices, and they needed to be taken into account. The bench stated that a remedy for contacting the police is typically provided by Section 156 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (police officers’ authority to investigate cognizable cases). Sibal asserted that seven wrestlers, one of whom was a minor, had made claims of sexual harassment, but no FIR has yet been filed despite the fact that the law is very clear on the subject.
