Elections to fill the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha will take place in a crucial shift after the opposition and the BJP-led government were unable to reach an agreement. Veteran Congress leader K Suresh has been nominated by the opposition, while BJP MP Om Birla has been nominated by the NDA.
Government’s Attempt to Build Consensus
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were brought in by the government to help reach a consensus on the choice for Lok Sabha Speaker. In the face of resistance, the INDIA group chose to move forward with their nominee.
Om Birla’s Strong Candidacy
Om Birla is an impressive contender who won the Kota Lok Sabha seat by a margin of more than 41,000 votes in the general elections. His prior term as Speaker and his electoral achievements bolster his standing.
Deputy Speaker Post in Focus
Prior conversations indicated that if the NDA’s nominee for Speaker was agreed upon, the deputy speaker seat may go to the opposition. The office of Deputy Speaker has been unoccupied since 2019, when M Thambi Durai of the AIADMK held it.
Rahul Gandhi’s Stance
Congress MP, Rahul Gandhi brought attention to the fact that Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge, the party president, asking for support for the NDA candidate. Gandhi reiterated that the Deputy Speaker post, by convention, should be given to the opposition.
“Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge and asked him to extend support to the Speaker. The entire opposition said we would support the Speaker, but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition. Rajnath Singh said that he would call back Mallikarjun Kharge, but he has not done that yet,” said Rahul Gandhi.
