CJI Lalit: The last working day of CJI UU Lalit had some emotional moments on Tuesday when he bowed down before the stairs on the Supreme Court premises. CJI Lalit chose to take with him the deity’s statue from his office where he spent his 74-day tenure as CJI.
He had an informal interaction with journalists covering the apex court and then went to the flight of stairs which leads to the first five court rooms. He bowed down before the stairs and then climbed up before going into the court of CJI and having a brief interaction with court officers.
Expresses gratitude
CJI Lalit, who was accompanied by his wife and daughter-in-law, also expressed gratitude to his support staff and other people for helping him during his tenure.
His support staff said CJI Lalit will be remembered for his humbleness. The CJI also got pictures clicked of himself with Supreme Court officials.
Justice Lalit passes on his baton to Justice DY Chandrachud who takes over as the 50th Chief Justice of India today. He spent 37 years at the Supreme Court – 29 years as a lawyer and the last 8 as a judge.

Bombay days
Born on November 9, 1957, Justice Lalit enrolled as an advocate in June, 1983 and practiced before the Bombay High Court till December, 1985. He then shifted to Delhi in January, 1986 where he was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in April, 2004.
He was a member of Supreme Court of India Legal Services Committee for two terms.
He was appointed judge of the Supreme Court of India on August 13, 2014. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of India on August 27, 2022.
