One Nation One Election: The concept of “One Nation, One Election,” or simultaneous elections, has the support of former President Ram Nath Kovind, who claims that it will be advantageous for any party holding power at the centre, including the Congress and the BJP. Heading the high-level committee on “one nation, one election” is Kovind, appointed by the government.
Kovind Engages with Media on Simultaneous Elections
Speaking to reporters in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, Kovind said he had discussed simultaneous elections with all national parties and asked for their advice. All political parties, he claimed, had backed it “at some point in time.” “The Government of India formed a high-level committee and appointed me as its chairman. Members of the committee, together with the people, will give suggestions to the government regarding the re-implementation of this tradition (‘one nation, one election’). I have also communicated with all the nationally registered political parties and sought their suggestions,” he said.
Kovind Affirms Every Party’s Past Support for Simultaneous Elections
“Every political party has supported it at some point in time. We are requesting all the parties for their constructive support as it is beneficial to the country. It is a matter of national interest,” he said. An eight-member high-level committee has been appointed by the government to investigate the possibility of holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats and to provide recommendations as soon as possible.
Kovind Leads First High-Level Committee Meeting on Synchronized Elections
The first high-level committee meeting on the concept of holding synchronised elections was presided over by Kovind on September 23. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, former Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh, former Secretary General of the Lok Sabha Subhash C Kashyap, and former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari were among those present at the initial meeting. Prominent attorney Harish Salve participated virtually in the meeting.
Law Commission Sources Rule Out Simultaneous Elections in 2024
In the meantime, Indiatoday.in was informed by Law Commission sources that simultaneous elections in 2024 would not be possible. However, according to a report by the news agency PTI, the commission was developing a plan to hold all state assembly elections in addition to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Polls were conducted simultaneously in 1951–1952, 1957, 1962, and 1967. However, elections were held separately after the Lok Sabha was dissolved in December 1970 and several legislative assemblies were dissolved in 1968 and 1969.
