One Nation One Election: In a momentous stride towards reforming India’s electoral system, the High-Level Committee on One Nation One Election, led by Ram Nath Kovind, presented its comprehensive report to President Droupadi Murmu. The report, an extensive document of 18,626 pages, embodies the conclusions from wide-ranging consultations with a plethora of stakeholders, including political entities, legal experts, and the general public, over a period of 191 days since its inception on September 2, 2023.

The committee, including eminent personalities such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Ghulam Nabi Azad, N K Singh, Subhash C Kashyap, Harish Salve, and Sanjay Kothari, with Arjun Ram Meghwal as a Special Invitee and Niten Chandra as the Secretary, engaged in exhaustive discussions to gauge the nation’s pulse on the proposition of synchronized elections.

A significant majority of the political parties and public responded favorably to the idea, with 32 out of 47 political parties and 80% of the 21,558 citizen responses endorsing the concept of simultaneous elections. The committee also solicited opinions from legal and economic experts, including four former Chief Justices of India, twelve former High Court Chief Justices, and chiefs of major economic bodies, who highlighted the potential economic benefits and the positive impact on governance and social harmony of moving towards synchronized elections.

The proposed two-step approach aims first to align the electoral cycles of the House of the People and the State Legislative Assemblies, followed by harmonizing the elections of Municipalities and Panchayats within a hundred days of the aforementioned elections. This ambitious proposal seeks to mitigate the disruptive effects of staggered elections on governance, economic stability, and social fabric, marking a significant chapter in the evolution of Indian democracy.
