The Republic Day parade will include only female participants in march pasts by forces, tableaux, and performances as part of a significant effort to encourage female participation in the military and other areas.
The ceremonial branch of the Ministry of Defence, which coordinates with all other ministries and departments to organise the Republic Day parade, released a note to all of the armed forces as well as other significant stakeholders, according to defence sources.
“After detailed deliberations, it has been decided that Republic Day 2024 will have women participation, including contingents (marching and bands), tableaux and performances during the parade at the Kartavya Path,” they said.
The decision to host the all-women parade in the upcoming year has been communicated by the Defence Ministry to other departments, including Home Affairs, Culture, and Urban Development.
As women have been given leadership opportunities and deployed in combat roles in recent years, the defence forces and paramilitary contingents have chosen female contingent commanders and deputy commanders in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to encourage their participation in all military roles.
These chances have allowed women to join the Indian Army as jawans and become fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force.
The Army has allowed women officers to join the Regiment of Artillery.
