Around 5,800 people from Manipur have fled to Mizoram and sought safety in various districts as a result of the recent deadly violence between the Meiteis and tribals in the neighbouring state, according to officials on Sunday.
They claim that 5,822 members of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo tribe are being housed in six different Mizoram districts’ temporary relief facilities.
As of 2021, the government reports that the Aizawl district has the most displaced people, followed by Kolasib (1,847) and Saitual (1,790).
The Mizoram Lok Sabha member C Lalrosanga has given his approval to the Manipur tribal MLAs’ demand for a separate tribal government.
In the wake of the violent clash 10 Kuki MLAs, including seven from the BJP, demanded that the Centre set up a separate administration, claiming that indigenous people could no longer live under the Manipur government.
After a “Tribal Solidarity March” was arranged throughout the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, fighting broke out in Manipur.
