PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will end

Announcing this, Piyush Goyal said that 81.35 crore people will benefit from this decision. The central government will spend around Rs 2 lakh crore per year on this scheme. Food Minister Piyush Goyal informed about this decision taken in the cabinet meeting. He said that food grains would be provided free of cost to the poor under NFSA. Along with this, the government has decided not to extend the period of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) which is going to end on December 31.

Government is giving free ration to 81.35 crore beneficiaries

Under this scheme, 81.35 crore beneficiaries have been given free ration by the government. The food grains given under this scheme are different from the subsidized food grains available under NFSA.

Under the NFSA law, which guarantees food security, the government has been providing five kilograms of food grains every month to every eligible person at the rate of two to three rupees per kilogram.

On the other hand, the families coming under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana get 35 kg of food grains every month. Under the NFS, rice is provided at the rate of Rs.3 per kg and wheat at the rate of Rs.2 per kg to the poor.

Terming the Union Cabinet’s decision to provide free ration to over 81 crore people under NFSA as a ‘New Year gift’ to the poor of the country, government officials said that the beneficiaries will no longer have to pay a single rupee for food grains. The government will bear the entire burden of about two lakh crore rupees on this.
