Two Pakistan-based intruders returned safely after being fired upon by BSF personnel late last night. The incident took place near Paharipur Border Out Post (BOP) of BSF’s 121 Battalion located near Ujh river.
BSF Officer statement
Police and BSF officials say the movement of the intruders, likely to be bird watchers, was observed by hand-held thermal imaging cameras. “We fired seven rounds. They must be searching for migratory birds. On several occasions in the past, ornithologists have come near the International Border (IB) on bird-watching expeditions, but have turned back when they learn of the dangers ahead. A dense blanket of fog had enveloped the area last night. This raised suspicion that they could be infiltrators as militants usually take advantage of adverse weather conditions to sneak into Indian territory. We were in no position to take a risk and hence we opened fire,” said the BSF officer.
BSF DIG (Gurdaspur Sector) Prabhakar Joshi reached the spot and immediately ordered a search operation.
When Pathankot police got information about the incident, SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh sent a BSF rank officer to the spot. DGP Gaurav Yadav was informed about the incident.
BSF personnel along the international border have been equipped with hand held thermal cameras
BSF personnel along the international border have been equipped with hand held thermal cameras. The device is a type of thermographic camera that allows jawans to see areas through smoke or darkness. These cameras are usually hand held but can also be mounted on helmets.
