Pakistan On Kargil War: In a significant revelation, the Pakistani army has publicly acknowledged its direct involvement in the 1999 Kargil War against India for the first time. Speaking at an event in Rawalpindi to commemorate the country’s Defence Day, Pakistan’s army chief General Asim Munir stated that several Pakistani soldiers had sacrificed their lives during wars with India, including the Kargil conflict.
“Be it 1948, 1965, 1971, or the Kargil war of 1999, thousands of soldiers have sacrificed their lives for Pakistan and Islam,” General Munir said during the event, marking a rare admission of the army’s participation in the Kargil War.
Until now, Pakistan had officially claimed that the Kargil conflict was led by “mujahideen” or freedom fighters, without acknowledging the direct role of its military. The war ended in a crushing defeat for Pakistan, with Indian forces successfully reclaiming positions held by infiltrators on the Indian side of the Line of Control (LoC) after a nearly three-month-long battle in Ladakh. Strategic locations like Tiger Hill were recaptured by the Indian Army during the operation.
International Pressure and Withdrawal
During the conflict, then US President Bill Clinton intervened and urged Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to order the withdrawal of Pakistani troops from the Kargil sector. The war ended with Pakistan’s withdrawal, marking a significant victory for India.
India’s Stance and Evidence of Pakistan’s Involvement
India has consistently maintained that the Kargil War was a calculated move by Pakistan to assert its claim over Kashmir. The Indian Army gathered substantial evidence of the Pakistani military’s involvement, including the capture of prisoners of war, pay books, uniforms, and weapons belonging to Pakistani soldiers. Several dead Pakistani soldiers were also buried by the Indian Army in the Kargil region.
General Munir’s public acknowledgment of the army’s involvement in the Kargil War represents a shift in Pakistan’s stance on the conflict, which has been a point of contention between the two neighboring nations for over two decades.
