G20 Summit: The success of India in hosting the G20 Summit and navigating the diplomatic minefield to strike an agreement on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine was lauded by international media. However, the viewpoints expressed by media sources in China and Pakistan, which see themselves as India’s competitors, are varied and fascinating.
Pakistan’s Dawn Expresses Frustration and Jealousy Over India’s G20 Diplomatic Success
Newspapers like Pakistan‘s Dawn and many others provide a window into the mindset of our two rival neighbours, ranging from reeking of overt jealously to attempting to belittle the outcome of the G20 Summit in Delhi. The Dawn doesn’t even try to downplay Pakistan’s anger about its domestic economic situation and India’s expanding global influence. The Dawn focuses on the opening of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor rather than just the joint declaration. As the new corridor “takes aim at China’s Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI), of which Pakistan is a key partner, it is stated that “geo-economics and geopolitics are also at play.” According to it, “The scheme will also come in handy by connecting Israel with the Arab states.”
Dawn Editorial Acknowledges Pakistan’s Reduced Role in Transnational Geo-Economic Networks
The Dawn editorial’s admission that Pakistan has been reduced to a mere spectator is what I find most interesting. “Where Pakistan is concerned, due to our internal issues, we are largely spectators rather than active players in these transnational geo-economic networks.” The Dawn editorial claims that despite India’s allegedly “atrocious record” on human rights, “the West and our Muslim brothers seem least concerned and are eager to do business with Delhi.” These opinion pieces stand in stark contrast to The Washington Post’s and the UK Telegraph’s respective articles, “Why India is poised to become the centre of the New World Order” and “India forges compromise among divided world powers at the G20 summit in a diplomatic win for Modi.” The views of China and Pakistan are intriguing but unsurprising given that everyone else, including Russia (India prevented the “Ukrainization” of the G20 agenda) and the United States, has stated that they “absolutely believe the G20 Summit in India was a success.” Not Only Pakistani Media but also citizens reacts on G20 Summit.
