Parliament winter session: The Lok Sabha Secretariat barred the 141 suspended Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Parliament chamber, lobby, and galleries on Tuesday, according to a circular that was released by the office. Following the suspension of 46 MPs from the Rajya Sabha and 95 MPs from the Lok Sabha, the INDIA coalition announced nationwide anti-government protests on Friday.
Suspensions Amidst 2001 Parliament Attacks Anniversary
The event happened on December 13, the day the country commemorated 22 years of the 2001 Parliament attacks. The development followed a commotion over the opposition’s demand that Union Minister Amit Shah issue a statement regarding the incident involving the breach of Parliament security. The government defended the action by claiming that the suspended MPs had insulted the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, the speaker of the Lok Sabha, and the Parliamentary system, despite the opposition bloc denouncing the suspensions as “undemocratic.”
Congress Chief’s Call to Action
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge provided more details about the planned protest on Friday, stating that a nationwide demonstration against the suspension of 141 MPs will take place on December 22 in response to the opposition’s demand that Union Minister Amit Shah make a statement regarding the incident involving the breach of Parliament security.
Opposition Unites Against Suspension of MPs
“We have taken several decisions, one is on the suspended MPs. We will fight against this; this is wrong. We have united to fight against this. We have decided to hold an all-India protest against the suspension of MPs on December 22. We have passed a resolution that suspension is undemocratic. We will all have to fight to save democracy and all of us are ready to do that. We raised the issue of security breach in Parliament. We have been saying for a long time that Amit Shah or PM Modi should come to Parliament and speak in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha about the issue of Parliament security breach, but they are refusing to do so,” Kharge said on Tuesday.
Om Birla Threatens Action Amidst Opposition Protest
Speaker Om Birla threatened to take action, citing procedural rules, after opposition members crowded into the Well of the House during Tuesday’s Lok Sabha meeting and began chanting and waving placards. But he postponed the proceedings until noon because the protest persisted.
