At least six workers are feared trapped inside the debris of a four-lane tunnel in the under-construction lane in Jammu’s Ramban district that collapsed on Thursday (May 19).
The rescue operation is underway. Video released by news agency ANI shows a bulldozer attempting to clear the debris to find those trapped inside. The ill-fated lane has been under construction on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in the Ramban district. At least four people have been injured and trapping several others, officials told PTI.
Union minister Jitendra Singh took to Twitter to share more information about the situation. He said that rescue operations were underway and going on in full swing. He added that civil administration and police authorities were monitoring the situation.
“Unfortunate incident of collapse of an under construction tunnel on National Highway stretch between Ramban and Ramsu in district Ramban, Jammu & Kashmir. I’m in constant touch with DC Sh Mussrat Islam. Nearly 10 labour workers trapped under the debris. Another 2 rescued and hospitalised with injuries.”
Officials said that several machines and vehicles parked on the front side of the tunnel suffered damage.
Those trapped inside the tunnel belonged to Sarla Company engaged in the construction of the tunnel. The missing workers have been identified as Jadav Roy, 23, Gautam Roy, 22, Sudhir Roy, 31, Dipak Roy, 33, Parimal Roy, 38, Shiva Chowhan, 26, Nawaraj Chowdhury, 26, Kushi Ram, 25, Mujaffar, 38, and Israt, 30.
