Patna News: The famous ‘Dudhiya Malda’ Mangoes known for their sweet aroma and thin skin are on the verge of extinction. The fruits are becoming smaller in size every year also the orchards of these famous mangoes are also shrinking. According to the locals, the concrete buildings and the accumulation of rain and drain water in the orchards could be one of the reasons for the extinction of these rare mango species. While the mangoes are available in the markets for around 70 kg, the freshly plucked from the tress are sold for around 160 to 180 Rs per kg.
Real Maldas are hardly available now’
On the other hand, despite of being so expensive, the mango lovers are not being able to enjoy the real ones. The vendors are selling other mangoes on the name of ‘Digha Malda Mangoes’. The real Digha mangoes are hardly available in the market as they are sold within minutes after being plucked. While the old tress are nearly 100 years old, the mangoes from the newly planted tress have a different taste. The locals demand that the government should immediately look into these issues and sought scientific intervention to save the variety of mangoes from getting into extinction. A local Forest officer who is taking care of the trees for the past 22 years said that earlier one mango from this variety used to be of 800 to 900 grams, but now they are around 150 to 200 grams. There were days when this area used to be fill with a lot of mango trees, right now am hardly looking after 80 trees. However, he said that extreme weather conditions could also be one of the reasons for the extinction of these mangoes.
