From September 24 till now, the price of diesel has increased by Rs. 3.80 paise per liter. Whereas petrol has become costlier by Rs 2.70 paise per liter since 28 September. So far in this month, only one day (October 04) the rates of petrol and diesel have remained stable. The rest of the days saw an increase in fuel prices.
The fuel rates vary from state to state and also in cities, depending on the incidence of local taxes like value-added tax (VAT) and freight charges. According to reports, Rajasthan levies the highest VAT in the country, followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
State-run oil refiners such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum revise the fuel rates on a daily basis, by taking into account the crude oil prices in international markets as well as the rupee-dollar exchange rates. Any changes in petrol and diesel prices are implemented with effect from 6 am every day.
