Pioneer of Chipko Movement Sundarlal Bahuguna dies of COVID

Environmentalist activist Sundarlal Bahuguna, the pioneer of the Chipko Movement against deforestation in the 1970s has passed away in Uttarakhand this afternoon.

The Environmentalist was 94-years-old.

He was being treated for COVID-19 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh. The hospital authority declared the news of his demial at 12:05.

Sundarlal was one of the India best-known environmentalist, was admitted to the hospital on May 8 after testing positive for the coronavirus. His condition turned critical last night, with his oxygen level dropping drastically. He was on CPAP therapy in the hospital’s ICU.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled to his death through his tweet stating, “Passing away of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna Ji is a monumental loss for our nation. He manifested our centuries old ethos of living in harmony with nature. His simplicity and spirit of compassion will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and many admirers. Om Shanti.”
