Inter-Services postings– A step ahead
Cross-service postings forms the bases for creation of theaterisation. The officers selected for cross-postings will learn the functional apparatus and ethos required by each service. Currently, the Defence Cyber Agency and Defence Space Agency are divisions of the Indian Armed Forces under the Integrated Defence Staff with inter-service postings from tri-services. One official stated that “Around 25 one- and two-star officers (ranks of Brigadier and Major General) could go for inter-service postings in the next few months.” The ultimate aim is to enhance jointness and integration within the three services.

Creation of common Annual Confidential Report (ACR)
The Indian military has recently approved common ACR for two and three-star officers. This move is aimed at assisting expansion of cross-services postings. “At times, officers junior to their colleagues during commissioning get promoted faster and hold higher appointments, while their senior colleagues await their promotions,” an official said. Currently the ACRs in three services vary with higher grading in army compared to other services. Another official stated “Once the cross-staffing move is implemented and institutionalised, the ACRs of officers in such appointments would need to be standardised and the decision to have a common ACRs for the senior officers is a step in this direction.”
