During the G7 Summit engagement session in Italy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the democratisation of technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and the issues facing the Global South. Throughout his lecture, he emphasised how crucial it is to provide everyone in society with access to technical breakthroughs in order to reduce social inequality and improve human potential.
Democratising Technology for All
PM Modi underscored the necessity of ensuring that technology benefits everyone in society. He stated, “We have to collectively ensure that the benefits of technology reach all sections, highlight the potential of every person in society, help in removing social inequalities, and expand human capabilities instead of limiting them. This should not only be our desire but our responsibility.”
India’s Commitment to AI
With pride, the prime minister stated that India is one of the first nations to create a national artificial intelligence strategy. The AI Mission, which was introduced this year with the motto “AI for All,” representing India’s dedication to incorporating AI into a range of industries for inclusive growth, was also noted by him.
Addressing the Global South’s Concerns
PM Modi emphasized the challenges faced by the Global South due to global uncertainties and tensions. He affirmed India’s responsibility to voice the priorities and concerns of these countries on the global stage.
Bilateral Meetings with World Leaders
Meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
Upon his arrival in Italy, PM Modi met with his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni. The leaders greeted each other with the traditional namaste and briefly exchanged greetings.
Encounter with Pope Francis
PM Modi also met Pope Francis at the summit venue. He invited the Pope to visit India, praising his dedication to serving humanity and improving the world.
Discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron
PM Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron had a bilateral discussion where they talked about strengthening the strategic alliance between France and India. Defence, nuclear energy, space exploration, education, combating climate change, digital infrastructure, vital technologies, connectivity, and cross-cultural interactions were among the main areas of attention. They agreed to intensify strategic defence cooperation, particularly under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Talks with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
During his meeting with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the leaders focused on the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They discussed boosting industrial cooperation in the defence sector and enhancing trade and commerce.
Conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
In addition, PM Modi received a briefing on the Russia-Ukraine crisis from Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine. In addition to reiterating India’s commitment to promoting diplomatic and peaceful means of conflict resolution, PM Modi expressed his desire to bolster bilateral ties with Ukraine.
Participation in G7 Summit Sessions
PM Modi took part in a number of summit sessions, where topics including as energy, artificial intelligence, and the Africa-Mediterranean region were discussed. Leaders from 11 developing nations in Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific area attended the summit, which was organised by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and demonstrated Italy’s support for the Global South.
