President Draupadi Murmu received the Grand Order of the Chain of Yellow Star, Suriname’s highest civilian honor on Monday. With this, she became the first Indian to be conferred with this prestigious honour. The award was presented to the President by her Republic of Suriname counterpart Chandrikapersad Santokhi. Now, PM Narendra Modi has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the President for receiving the top honour.

PM Modi took to Twitter to extend his congratulatory wishes to President Murmu on being conferred the highest civilian award of Suriname. He wrote, “Congratulations to Rashtrapati ji on being conferred the highest civilian award of Suriname – Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star. This special gesture from the Government and people of Suriname symbolizes the enduring friendship between our countries”
President Murmu after receiving the honour shared her gratitude on Twitter and dedicated it to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community. “I am greatly honored to receive Suriname’s highest distinction, “Grand Order of the Chain of the Yellow Star.” This recognition holds tremendous significance, not only for me but also for the 1.4 billion people of India whom I represent. I also dedicate this honor to the successive generations of the Indian-Surinamese community, who have played a stellar role in enriching the fraternal ties between our two countries,” she wrote.
‘Indians have reached highest positions in Suriname’
Addressing the people of Suriname on Monday, President Murmu said that a mini India resides in Suriname and highlighted the significant contributions made by Indians in the country.
“My first state visit after assuming office is to Suriname. It is a privilege for me to be a part of the celebration of 150 years of the arrival of Indians in Suriname. It is a matter of pride for us that Indians have reached the highest positions in Suriname. Indians have been contributing significantly to the development of Suriname economically, socially and culturally,” she said.
