Rare Breed Characteristics
The Punganur breed is indigenous to the southern Andhra Pradesh region of Rayalaseema, specifically the talukas of Punganoor, Vayalapadu, Madanapalli, and Palamaneer in the district of Chittoor. They are a rare breed of dwarf cattle that are thought to have the shortest humped cattle worldwide. It’s simple to keep them at home because of their little size.
Diverse Color Palette
Punganur cows can be light or dark brown in hues, or they might be grey or white. Their horns are short, crescent-shaped, and range in length from 10 to 15 cm. In male cattle of the breed, they often curve backward and forward, whereas in female calves, they curve lateral and forward. The horns on females are somewhat longer than those on males, which are stumpier.
Some Points About Punganur Cow
- They can thrive on dry food and are quite resistant to drought.
- They are able to adjust to poor feed.
- 3–5 litres of milk, with a high fat content (8%) and excellent nutritional value (9% SNF), are produced by Punganur cows.
- They can cost as much as Rs 20 lakh, and a litre of their milk costs about Rs 300.
