BJP Secures 240 Seats
Tuesday was the day for the 2024 Lok Sabha election tallying. The Election Commission of India reports that the BJP secured 240 seats, significantly fewer than their 2019 total of 303 seats. In contrast, the Congress saw a significant increase, gaining 99 seats. Defying all expectations and posing fierce competition, the INDIA bloc crossed the 230 mark.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been granted a third term, but the BJP will require the backing of JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, two other parties in his alliance. After the ballots from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were tabulated, the BJP was 32 seats shy of a majority. It did not win a majority by itself for the first time since the Bharatiya Janata Party stormed to power in 2014.
