PM Modi Reflects on 50 Years Since Emergency, Urges Nation to Protect Democracy

In his reflections on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls on the people to recall the repression of democracy and make a decision to defend India's Constitution and democratic principles.

PM Modi: The Prime Minister stated to the media before to the opening of the 18th Lok Sabha session that the body will represent the ambitions and aspirations of a rising country. The Prime Minister recalled the Emergency era and stated that the new India would never forget the violations of constitutional values. Speaking on the recent legislative elections, he stated: “It was a historic election, with record numbers of people casting ballots. It was historic since it was the second time a government has been reelected three times since independence.”

PM Modi Assures Enhanced Dedication

PM Modi said, “The people of the country have given us an opportunity for the third time. This is a great victory, a grand victory. Our responsibility increased threefold…So, I assure the countrymen that in our third tenure, we will work three times harder and we will get three-time results.”

Speaking About the emergency period PM Modi said, “Tomorrow is 25th June. 25th June marks 50 years of the blot that was put on the democracy of India. The new generation of India will never forget that the Constitution of India was completely rejected, every part of the Constitution was torn to pieces, the country was turned into a prison, democracy was completely suppressed…While protecting our Constitution, while protecting the democracy of India, the democratic traditions, the countrymen will take a resolution that no one will dare to do such a thing in India again which was done 50 years ago.”

He added, “We will take a resolution of a vibrant democracy. We will take a resolution to fulfil the dreams of the common people as per the directions of the Constitution of India.” The prime minister also declared that everyone will be involved in his government’s efforts to realize the people’s dreams. In addition, Modi mentioned that June 25 is the 50th anniversary of the Emergency and called the repeal of the Constitution a “black spot” on India’s democracy.

Optimism in Opposition’s Responsibilities and Democratic Duty

As he greeted the new members of parliament, he stated that the goal of the 18th Lok Sabha is to create a developed India by 2047. He expressed optimism that the opposition would fulfill its responsibilities and uphold the dignity of democracy, saying that while people anticipate positive actions from it, its performance thus far has been disappointing. People in India prefer content over slogans, and the country needs a responsible opposition.

He took a jab at the opposition, saying, “They want debate, diligence, not disturbance in Parliament.” The prime minister announced that the recently concluded parliamentary elections saw 65 crore voters cast ballots, marking the second occasion since independence that a government was chosen for a third consecutive term. It was the event of sixty years.

Congress President Challenges PM Modi on Emergency References

Holding a copy of the Constitution, the leaders of the opposition bloc known as “India Block” demonstrated during the opening session of the 18th Lok Sabha. “PM Modi tried to break the Constitution, which is why the leaders of all the parties have come together and are protesting today,” states the national head of the biggest opposition party, the Congress. Here was a statue of Gandhi, and they are disobeying every democratic rule. To demonstrate that the government ought to proceed in accordance with the Constitution is our goal.” After PM Modi mentioned ’emergency’, the Congress national president said, “He will say this 100 times and is doing so without declaring an emergency himself. How long do you (PM Modi) want to rule by talking about this?”
