Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi scolded some opposition leaders for eating meat during the holy month of Sawan, saying they were showing a “Mughal mindset.” He didn’t say their names but took aim at Congress and INDIA bloc leaders, accusing them of cooking meat after visiting a convicted criminal’s house and making videos to make fun of people.
Opposition’s Non-Vegetarian Consumption During Sacred Period
PM Modi’s remarks were triggered by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav’s house in Delhi in 2023, where they cooked Bihar’s special “Champaran mutton.” Although the meeting occurred on August 4, 2023, the video was released after the conclusion of the holy month of Sawan last year. Additionally, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav faced criticism from the BJP for eating fish during Navratri, further intensifying the debate over dietary choices during religious periods.
PM Modi’s Comparison to Mughal Mentality
Drawing parallels to historical events, PM Modi likened the actions of opposition leaders to the tactics of the Mughals, who not only aimed to defeat ruling kings but also sought to destroy temples and places of worship. He accused the opposition of provoking sentiments by releasing videos during Sawan, akin to the Mughals’ enjoyment in desecrating religious sites.
Criticism of Opposition’s Intentions
While emphasizing that neither he nor the law prohibits anyone from consuming vegetarian or non-vegetarian food, PM Modi questioned the intentions behind the opposition’s actions. He alleged that the videos were uploaded for political gain, targeting specific voter demographics. The Prime Minister warned that the opposition’s actions risked stirring public unrest and emphasized his duty to speak out against such behavior in a democracy.
