Chennai airport terminal: All eyes will be on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday April 8 as he inaugurates the new terminal building of Chennai airport. It is part of the first phase of the Airport Modernisation phase II. Tight security is in place in Tamil Nadu in view of the PM’s impending visit. The PM in a tweet said the state-of-the-art building will enhance connectivity and give a boost to the economy.
Meanwhile, the Airport Authority of India, Chennai airport tweeted that the integrated terminal building is a tribute to the local Tamil culture.
PM has a busy day
A busy schedule awaits the PM as he is also scheduled to flag off the Vande Bharat train between Chennai and Coimbatore at the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M G R Central Railway Station.
Later in the day, the PM will also take part in the 125th annual day celebrations of Ramakrishna Mutt at Vivekanandhar Illam on the Kamarajar Salai (Beach Road) and also launch infrastructure projects at Pallavaram.
There are five important features of the new Chennai airport terminal that need to be factored in.
Tribute to local Tamil culture
Constructed at a cost of ₹1,260 crore, the integrated terminal building is a tribute to the local Tamil culture and showcases traditional elements like the kolam, saree and temples. The ceilings are tastefully done up with motif lights that represent the Kolam patterns. The pillars and columns are made with stainless steel champagne strips adding a goldentouch to the aesthetics. The new building is spread across 2.20 lakh sq metres and can handle nearly 35 million passengers per year, says the ministry of civil aviation.
The arrival and departure points will have 54 immigration counters each to speed up the transit procedures. Another important highlight is the skylight, which utilises natural light to light up the space inside the building and reduces energy consumption.
Last but not the least, 11 automatic tray retrieval systems (ATRS) for carry-on baggage and 33 remote boarding gates will facilitate a smoother security screening process. The self- baggage drop facilities by scanning the boarding pass will also help quicken check-in formalities.
