Over 120 developing nations will join the two-day special virtual summit, “Voice of Global South Summit,” that will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
No member of the influential G-20 group—of which India is currently the president—including China has been invited, according to information obtained from New Delhi. This is because, according to New Delhi, “India’s ongoing presidency of the G-20 provides a special and strong opportunity for those countries that are not part of the G-20 process to share their ideas and expectations from the G-20.” It is unclear if Pakistan has received any invites.
Senior ministers and several heads of state/government from asian nations, Africa, and Latin America are expected to participate. Prior to the G-20 summit, which India will host in New Delhi in September as part of its presidency, the action will greatly assist India in giving a voice to the poor world. A session on “suggestions for India’s G-20 presidency” will also be held during the summit. Modi will take part in the summit’s opening and closing sessions.
Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose
The summit’s theme is “Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose.” Vinay Mohan Kwatra, the foreign secretary, had stated last week that the summit’s goal would be to share the goals and viewpoints of the Global South (poor nations) on a shared forum for “deliberations, ideas, and solutions.”
He continued by saying that the summit was motivated by Mr. Modi’s vision of “inclusivity, development, confidence, and efforts of all” (Sabka Saath, Sabka vikas, Sabka vishwas, Sabka prayas) and India’s “Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam” (the world is one family).
10 sessions will be held during in the summit, two of which will be at the level of heads of state or government and the other eight will be at the ministerial level. Leaders/ministers from 10 to 20 different nations are expected to attend each session.
Both the opening session on Thursday and the closing session on Friday will be addressed by PM Modi. “Voice of the Global South — for Human-Centric Development” is the theme of the opening leaders’ session, while “Unity of Voice — Unity of Purpose” is the theme of the closing leaders’ session.
The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis on rising costs and shortages of food, fertiliser, and fuel for the developing globe are only two of the topics that are expected to be covered at the summit. Climate change, climate finance, and climate technology will all be covered. The summit will also go over the developing countries’ rising debt and inflation issues.
