This daily wage rate hike is the second revision this year, following an earlier update in April 2024.
The new minimum wage rates are set to take effect from October 1, 2024, and workers will be entitled to receive retroactive benefits starting from April 2024.
Breakdown of the New Minimum Wage Rates
The revision impacts workers in different categories, with varying wage rates based on their skill levels:
- Unskilled Workers: This group includes laborers involved in construction, cleaning, and similar jobs. Under the new wage structure, unskilled workers in Sector A will now receive ₹783 per day, translating to ₹20,358 per month.
- Semi-Skilled Workers: Workers classified as semi-skilled, often performing more technical tasks, will now earn ₹868 per day, or ₹22,568 per month.
- Skilled Workers: Clerks, technicians, and unarmed guards, falling under the skilled worker category, will see their minimum wage rate rise to ₹954 per day, bringing their monthly earnings to ₹24,804.
- Highly Skilled Workers: For those with more advanced skills, the daily wage rate has been raised to ₹1,035 per day, meaning they will now earn ₹26,910 per month.
Central Government’s Efforts to Support Workers
The Ministry of Labour highlighted that this wage hike is part of a larger effort by the central government to help workers, especially those in the unorganized sector, who are most affected by rising living costs. The increase in minimum wages aims to ensure that workers receive fair pay.
