Narendra Modi’s Inspiring Journey

The people of India can draw a lot of inspiration from Narendra Modi’s life and work. His experience disproved the idea that privilege is a prerequisite for success in life. In the Gujarati town of Vadnagar, on September 17, 1950, Narendra Modi was born. His father, Damodardas, supported himself by operating a tea shop on the station platform of the town. After school, Modi assisted his father at the tea shop.  He served tea to railway passengers, “but young Narendra wanted more than most others: to be involved in a larger, more grown-up world beyond the classroom,” writes Andy Marino in Narendra Modi: A Political Biography. Here is a look back at his rise from chaiwala to prime minister of India.

Narendra Modi’s RSS Involvement and Organizational Skills

When Modi was eight years old, he started going to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) shakha in his neighbourhood. He developed his leadership and organising skills in this group to the point where, in 1991, he was given the responsibility of organising Murli Manohar Joshi’s “Ekta Yatra.”

Modi’s Role in Gujarat Lok Sangharsh Samiti

Establishing the Gujarat Lok Sangharsh Samiti (GLSS), a coordinating council of this resistance, was one of the RSS’s first operations during the Emergency. He was made general secretary of the GLSS at the time by Lakshmanrao Inamdar, well known as Vakil Saheb in Sangh circles and one of the founding fathers of the RSS in Gujarat. Modi actively participated in the opposition to Indira Gandhi’s Emergency regulations. He was elevated to the status of “sambhaag pracharak,” or a regional organiser, in 1978 as a result of the role he played during the Emergency.

From Party Secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister

He was given the responsibility of five important Indian states when he was made the party’s national secretary in 1995. He was nominated to be the chief minister of Gujarat in October 2001 after being appointed to general secretary (organisation) in 1998. When Keshubhai Patel, the former chief minister of Gujarat, was forced to resign as a result of the aftermath of the January earthquake that claimed around 20,000 lives, it was Modi’s major break. He was chosen to take Patel’s place. Gujarat was well-known for its natural disasters and drought before Modi seized control of the state. “However, the image was transformed to a state synonymous with development. And, the credit goes to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. The development of the state has become a talking point not only within India but across the world. Gujarat had never earned such a reputation and popularity before as it has during the last twelve years,” read a detailed officials statement issued by the state government in 2013. “Gujarat’s image has become that of a growth engine of the country. The state has clocked a growth rate of 13 per cent in industrial and 10.7 per cent in agriculture sectors apart from contributing 22 per cent to India’s overall exports,” claimed the statement.

PM Modi’s Transformational Leadership

PM Modi was selected as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate in 2013 due to his achievements as Gujarat’s chief minister and his ability to “fix mess.” Andy Marino writes, “The BJP’s choice of Modi reflects a change of tactics: unleashing a daring cavalry charge against the Congress instead of sticking with the safer, attritional trench warfare, advancing and retreating yard by yard. It may be seen as a revolution of youthful optimism – or impatience – and perhaps a sign that the Indian people, if not its politicians, crave change. It is also a sign that the centre of gravity of Indian politics is shifting from Delhi to the states.” A new India started to take shape under his leadership. In addition to trying to right the wrongs of the past by repealing Article 370, he also drew up plans for a better future for the nation by enacting a number of measures, such as the GST and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which have clearly improved how people live in India. His diplomatic prowess has elevated India in the political world. Its economy currently ranks as the fifth largest in the world.
