After more than four decades, an Indian Prime Minister has arrived in Vienna for a historic visit, aiming to unlock the full potential of the bilateral partnership between India and Austria. On Tuesday, PM Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer for a private meeting shortly after his arrival.
A Landmark Moment in India-Austria Relations
Speaking in Vienna, PM Modi expressed his happiness about visiting Austria at the start of his third term. “This trip is historic and special,” he said. “After 41 years, an Indian PM has visited Austria. Today, Chancellor Karl Nehammer and I had a very meaningful discussion. We explored new ways to strengthen our ties and decided to give these ties a strategic direction in sectors like infrastructure development, renewable energy, hydrogen, water and waste management, and artificial intelligence. We aim to link each other’s capabilities.”
A Warm and Melodic Welcome
In a heartwarming gesture, Austrian artists sang ‘Vande Mataram’ to welcome Prime Minister Modi. He appreciated Austria’s vibrant musical culture, sharing on X, “Austria is known for its vibrant musical culture. I got a glimpse of it thanks to this amazing rendition of Vande Mataram.”
Looking Forward to Strengthened Ties
Earlier, PM Modi expressed his anticipation for various programs in Austria, including discussions with Chancellor Nehammer. Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg welcomed him at the airport. Reflecting on the visit, the MEA spokesperson noted on X, “As the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year, this momentous visit will add renewed momentum to India-Austria ties.”
