Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted he will not address poll rallies in West Bengal on Friday, and will instead chair high-level meetings in Delhi over the worsening situation of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the country.
“Tomorrow, will be chairing high-level meetings to review the prevailing Covid-19 situation. Due to that, I would not be going to West Bengal,” PM Modi tweeted on Thursday evening.
India is witnessing surge in Covid-19 cases which is putting enormous pressure on the country’s fatigued healthcare infrastructure. On Thursday, India recorded over 3 lakh new confirmed cases, the highest single-day tally recorded anywhere in the world since the beginning of the pandemic last year.
Prime Minister on Thursday chaired a high-level meeting to review the oxygen supply across the country and discuss ways and means to boost its availability.
The officials briefed him on the efforts undertaken in the last few weeks to improve oxygen supply.
During the briefing, Prime Minister Modi spoke about the need to work rapidly on increasing oxygen production, speed of distribution, and innovative ways to provide oxygen support to health facilities.
He also directed officials to ensure that oxygen supply to various states happens smoothly and uncontrolled. He spoke about the need to fix responsibility with the local administration in cases of obstruction.
