An on-duty police sub-inspector was shot dead, and two civilians sustained injuries in a firing incident that occurred in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Wednesday afternoon. The incident took place around 1:30 pm, with the sub-inspector, Ongmang Haokip, believed to have been killed by a suspected sniper’s bullet. Churachandpur is a Kuki-dominated district in Manipur.
Along with the sub-inspector’s fatal shooting, two civilians were also injured during the firing. However, specific information about their identities and the nature of their injuries was not available at the time of reporting.
Recent Violence in Manipur:
- This incident follows a series of violent events in Manipur over the past month.
- On the previous day, three individuals, all Kukis, were allegedly attacked and killed by armed miscreants wearing Manipur police commando outfits in Kangpokpi, another Kuki-dominated district.
- This marks the third instance of violence in September resulting in fatalities in Manipur.
- On September 8, two people were killed, and 40 others were injured in clashes between a large mob and security forces in Tengnoupal district, despite prohibitory orders in place.
- In late August (August 29 and 31), clashes between tribal Kukis and the dominant Meiteis resulted in at least eight deaths and over two dozen injuries, including three India Reserve Battalion personnel.
