Population Census: Government Plans 2025 Census After Four-Year Delay; Delimitation to Follow

Population Census: The Indian government is set to launch the next nationwide census in 2025, following a four-year delay, according to official sources. This extensive survey, critical for understanding the country’s demographic makeup, is expected to extend into 2026. Once the census is complete, authorities plan to undertake the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats, a process anticipated to conclude by 2028.

Calls for Inclusion of Caste Data Intensify

As news of the upcoming census surfaced, several opposition parties renewed their call for a comprehensive caste census. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in particular, has urged the government to clarify whether the census will include detailed caste-based data, calling for an all-party meeting to address related concerns. The demand highlights the push for socio-economic inclusivity and better policy targeting.

Potential New Survey Inclusions for Census 2025

While a final decision on a caste census remains pending, sources suggest that the upcoming census may incorporate surveys of sub-sects within both General and SC-ST categories. This addition would be in line with longstanding requests for more granular socio-economic data, facilitating a broader understanding of India’s diverse population. The census could thus cover traditional data points such as religion and social class alongside this new categorization.

The government is yet to release detailed guidelines or confirm these potential changes, leaving room for further developments in the months leading up to the census launch.
