Prajwal Revanna Case: In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urged him to revoke JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna‘s diplomatic passport in relation to the “obscene videos” matter. In addition, he asked PM Modi to take “immediate and coordinated steps to ensure his return to India.”
Condemnation of Revanna’s Flight to Germany
In a letter dated May 22, Siddaramaiah wrote, “Shameful that Prajwal Revanna…fled the country on 27th April 2024 to Germany using his diplomatic passport shortly after news of his heinous actions emerged and just a few hours before the first FIR was filed against him.”
The letter further read, “The Government of Karnataka has taken prompt actions to meet the ends of justice by setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) … is investigating the alleged crimes of Mr Prajwal Revanna against women and is making efforts to secure the presence of the accused in order to face the criminal charges.”
Siddaramaiah Urges PM Modi
CM Siddaramaiah asked PM Modi to bring back Prajwal Revanna from Germany in the letter. Shortly after the ‘obscene videos’ controversy, Revanna left the nation, even before the initial false report against him was made. The letter from the Karnataka government was received by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) today, according to PTI.
Urgent Appeal to PM Modi for Passport Cancellation
According to The Indian Express, Siddaramaiah had earlier written to Modi on May 1 pleading with him to order the cancellation of Prajwal’s diplomatic passport by the ministries of home and external affairs. Home Minister G Parameshwara of Karnataka stated on Wednesday that despite the state government’s letter to the Center requesting that it revoke Prajwal’s diplomatic passport following the issuance of the warrant by the court, they had not heard back as of yet, according to PTI.
Karnataka Government’s Plea for Center’s Assistance
He said, “Still nothing has come (from the Centre). The Centre also should help us, that’s what we are urging. There is no meaning in only criticising. The Centre should help us within the framework of the law.” The accused sexual offender Prajwal Revanna is running for reelection in the Lok Sabha in 2024. He is the grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) founder H D Deve Gowda, and he is running for the Lok Sabha seat in Hassan on behalf of the NDA.
A day after Hassan went to the polls on April 27, the accused Prajwal allegedly departed for Germany and is still at large. Charges of sexual abuse against him include several incidents of attacking women. The SIT is looking into the MP’s alleged history of sexual assault. Additionally, a Blue Corner Notice has been issued by Interpol asking for information regarding Prajwal Revanna’s whereabouts.
