President Kovind confers Padma awards Today

President Ram Nath Kovind conferred Padma awards to General Bipin Rawat (posthumous), Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and others at a civil investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.

Kritika and Tarini, daughters of CDS General Bipin Rawat, who dies in a tragic chopper crash in the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu in December 2021, received his Padma Vibhushan award.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Gurmeet Bawa (Posthumous), N. Chandrasekharan, Devendra Jhajharia, musician Rashid Khan, former Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, chairman of Serum Institute of India Cyrus Poonawalla and Sachchidanand Swami received the Padma Bhushan awards. The Civil Investiture Ceremony–II is scheduled to be held on March 28.

At today’s ceremony, the President conferred two Padma Vibhushan, eight Padma Bhushan and 54 Padma Shri awards.

The announcement for this year’s Padma awards was made by the Union Home Ministry in January this year. A total of 17 personalities were conferred with the Padma Bhushan. Tech giants Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO, and Sundar Pichai, Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet, are also on the list, and have been awarded under the category ‘trade and industry’.

The awards are conferred in three categories — Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

These awards are given in various disciplines and fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field.

The awards are announced on the eve of Republic Day every year. The awards are conferred by the President at ceremonial functions which are held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
