Punjab News: In a significant development, the Punjab government has agreed to implement the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, ending a protracted dispute with the central government. Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary announced in the Lok Sabha on Monday that the Punjab administration confirmed its decision to adopt the scheme on July 26, following repeated appeals from the Union education ministry.
Funding Freeze and Its Impact
The conflict began when the Punjab government opted out of the PM SHRI scheme on July 18, 2023. In response, the central government halted a crucial grant of over Rs 515 crore to Punjab under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, the primary national program for school education. This funding freeze had significant repercussions, potentially impacting various educational projects and school infrastructure improvements across the state.
Resolution and Future Prospects
With Punjab’s commitment to the PM SHRI scheme, both the state and central governments are expected to move forward with collaborative efforts to enhance school education. The resolution of this issue is anticipated to not only restore the halted funding but also bolster the implementation of the PM SHRI scheme, aimed at upgrading school facilities and improving educational standards nationwide.
