India Secures Second Consular Access for Navy Veterans Sentenced to Death in Qatar
The eight Navy veterans, employees of Doha-based Dahra Global, were sentenced to death on undisclosed charges by a Qatari court on October 26. The arrests, made in August 2022, were related to allegations of espionage. India strongly condemned the ruling, deploying diplomatic channels to engage with Qatar on the case.
Here’s Arrested Individuals List
The arrested individuals include Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh, all former members of the Indian Navy.
In response to MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi’s statement that the verdict was confidential, Congress leader Manish Tewari expressed skepticism, emphasizing that court judgments, especially those involving death sentences, should not be confidential. Tewari questioned why the families had not been provided with a copy of the judgment and urged transparency in the legal proceedings.
